Watch the video above for a 6 minute walk-thru showing How to Build an Assessment. This is the first video in our 5-part setup video series.

Otherwise, below you can find a step by step guide to building your first Assessment in TeamGenius.

From the Main Dashboard

On the main dashboard page, click "Create New".  Each Assessment represents a single evaluation event or period E.g. 2022-23 Summer Tryouts or 2022-23 In-Season Evaluation.

Use the search bar to find a template that is most similar to the evaluation you will be completing. When clicking a template, you can see a preview of criteria that you can later edit in your assessment.

If you are an experienced TeamGenius user, you may want to start with a Blank Template.

Once you've found your template, click "Get Started" in the lower right corner.

Next, create a name for your Assessment and click "Next".

You'll be taken through a list of questions with descriptions found below each question.

Once you click "Finish" after the last question, your assessment will be created.

Once your assessment is created, you will be taken to your assessment home page.

On the Home Page, you will see your access key (for evaluators to use in the mobile app) and a To Do List(things to do) in order to prepare your assessment.

Under setup on the left, start by editing your Scoring Forms.

Think of Scoring Forms as your overall categories. The individual Criteria that you will be evaluating players on in the mobile app are added under each Scoring Form.

You can set weights, provide instructions for evaluators, and more while creating your Scoring Forms and Criteria.

Next up, click on Player Pools on the left menu.

Player Pools are what you will use to group players in the mobile app, to make it easier for your evaluators to find which group of players they should be evaluating. All of the players within a Player Pool are rated against each other. We commonly see Player Pools as the age group to be evaluated (ex: 2008 or 09Boys).

You are able to generate an Access Key for each Player Pool if you are wanting to give evaluators access to the age group they've been assigned to evaluate, without them having access to all of the Player Pools.

Next, click Evaluation Schedule on the left-hand menu.

This is where you will create your Evaluation Schedule. Think of a Session as when you want to record scores for the player. If you have 2 days of evaluations, you might want to create 2 sessions so you can submit scores for each day. It's ok to have 1 session as well if you only need to record 1 set of scores.

If you want to give evaluators access to all of the Player Pools within a Session, you are able to generate an Access Key for the Session.

Next, you can create Comment Snippets to speed up the time it takes for Evaluators to leave comments in the Mobile App.

Create a Comment Snippet for things that you think Evaluators would commonly use/record during an evaluation. In the Hockey example, "Good hands" is something that evaluators use often, so it was created as a Comment Snippet and added to relevant criteria that it would be used in tandem with.

By using Advanced Access Keys, you can set the level of access an evaluator is given. In the example below, an evaluator can use the access key VVXAB and would have access to the session "Day 1" and Player Pool "Age Group 1". You can also set eval group specific access keys if they are created, and email access keys directly to evaluators - see video here.

Next, you will be given the option to invite users into your Assessment under User Permissions. Only do this for staff members/coaches who need access to the Admin side of your evaluation or results.

The Assessment level permissions are as follows:

  • Player check-in only - Ability to see/edit player check-in page only.
  • Manager - Ability to access the Results tab details (such as scores) and Messaging for the Player Pool they are assigned.
  • Owner - Ability to manage the entire assessment but cannot view/see other assessments created in the account.

Last, we have Advanced Settings. Here you can enable a variety of options to further customize your evaluation.

The Setting options for the Assessment are as follows:

  • Hide Names - Show only the player's number in an evaluation to evaluators
  • Player Assignment Shuffling - Allows you to move players between Player Pools and Eval groups from the Results tab (Most hockey organization will want this enabled)
  • Evaluation Criteria Strength Factor - Scale down subjective scores to have a lower value compared to other criteria
  • Profile Image Capture - Allow evaluators and administrators to take a player's photo using the mobile app
  • Mobile Check-In - Manage player check-in from your mobile device
